Dear Sirs,

I have been a member of an organization to which has been accused of being
Communistic and would like to have any information you can supply me
with.

I have known about it and read literature over a period of two ot [sic]
three years.  I have yet the first time to have anyone tell me it or I was
to offend or be disloyal to anyone, anywhere.  However, to satisfy those
with which I work with and communicate with, varification [sic] or deynial
[sic] must be made and I must definitely be satisfyed [sic].

To the very end I must defend myself and it until definite froof [sic]
avails it'self [sic].  I have been better in all ways since I have studied
it. I have been [inserted] more human than I remember ever being and able
to reason where there was never any before.

Also, I have never cared for my Country, Family, and friends, as I do now.
There is help to be given others and I will not refuse them when they
ask.

Your prompt attention to my request will be appreciated.  The Organization
is _SCIENTOLOGY_.  I know you must have the information on them.  If not
then, I suggest that you look into it.  The Address in Washington is 1812
19th St. N.W.

Your letter postmarked June 11, 1962, has been received.

Although I would like to be of service, the FBI is strictly an
investigative agency of the Federal Government and neither makes
evaluations or draws conclusions as to the character or integrity of any
organization, publication or individual.  In this connection, information
contained in our files is maintained as confidential pursuant to
regulations of the Department of Justice.  I regret I am unable to help
you and hope you will not infer either that we do or do not have data in
our files relating to your inquiry.

The Academy of Scientology, run by L. Ron Hubbard, is well-known to the
Bureau.  Hubbard is the founder and president of the Hubbard Dianetic
Research Foundation, Inc., for the purpose of furthering Hubbard's theory
of Scientology, an alleged science which instills self-confidence and
assists individuals in removing mental problems and

obtaining human ability.  Hubbard has been described as being "hopelessly
insane" by his wife in suing for divorce and the "Washington Times Herald"
of 4-24-51, in mentioning this divorce proceeding, stated that "competent
medical advisors recommended that Hubbard be committed to a private
sanitarium for psychiatric observation and treatment of a mental ailment
known as paranoid schizophrenia."  (105-55601-5)
